Brendan Rodgers believes tactical shift was key to win over Swansea
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has told the club’s official website that he believes the key to their victory over Swansea on Monday night was the tactical switch he made at half-time
Liverpool started the game with their customary 3-5-2 formation with two wing-backs, but they were superbly cancelled out by Swansea’s diamond formation.
It was the first time since the Reds switched to this set-up that they had really struggled, but at half-time Rodgers switched the formation a little bit and they won the game, thanks to a rather fortunate goal from Jordan Henderson.
The strike may have been completely unintentional, but it was no less than Henderson and Liverpool deserved given the way that they started the second half, and Rodgers praised the switch after the game.
He said: “It was a wonderful demonstration of the character and resilience in the team, especially [after] how we played in the first half. Any system you play in the game doesn’t work unless you have that ability to work, and we just weren’t anywhere near it in the first half. But that resilience and character kept us in the game.
“We knew we were going to be better in the second half, we changed the structure of the team a little bit and then I thought in the second half we really dominated the game.”
During the course of the match, Liverpool (13) created over twice as many chances as Swansea (five) and looked good value for the win. The Reds also completed 11 of their 20 attempted take-ons, as well as 85% of their passes.
The victory saw them keep pace with Arsenal and Manchester United above them, who both won 3-0 over the weekend against West Ham and Tottenham respectively.
On Sunday afternoon Liverpool host United at Anfield, in what could prove to be a crucial clash in the race for a Champions League spot.
