Neymar may be Brazil's current talisman but he'll never be the "king" of football, claims Pele, who says that he alone holds that title
The Barcelona forward has already scored 42 goals for Brazil in 60 appearances. While Pele had a better international scoring rate - 0.84 goals per game to Neymar's 0.7 - the 23-year-old is likely to surpass his career total of 92.
So, would that make Neymar the new king of football? "I think not," said Pele. "I think to be the new king, the new Pele, is impossible. Because my mother and my father closed the machine.
"I think he's a good player, an excellent young player and he's going to be a big star, no doubt."
Pele's talent and physical prowess may have diminished but his sense of self worth certainly hasn't, and the 74-year-old felt he would still be considered the best even if he had been playing now rather than 50 years ago.
"If you ask, would Beethoven be important now? Of course," he said.
"If I was in this moment and prepared to play in this moment. The thing people forget is I was given a gift to play football, this is something no-one can judge."
