Van Gaal has lost his aura

BBC Sport's football expert Mark Lawrenson believes Louis van Gaal has lost the aura he brought with him when he first arrived at Manchester United.

He said this when he was predicting the results of this weekend's Premier League fixtures.

Manchester United need to respond to their defeat by Swansea and nothing less than a win will do because competition for a Champions League place is so tight.

I think they will beat Sunderland, who still don't seem to be able to buy a goal, and it is about time they put in a really convincing performance.

Before losing in Wales, United were on a run of one defeat in 19 games but they had been pinching results and playing without any real conviction.

Part of the problem is that United boss Louis van Gaal has slowed the tempo of their play down so much that they are quite unrecognisable to their teams of the recent past.

Yes, they are beating all of the teams that are below them but United have some tough games coming up - they play Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea within the space of a month from mid-March.

The way they are playing, I would not be confident about their prospects of picking up too many points.

Van Gaal brought an aura with him when he took charge but, at the moment, there isn't one.

He just looks like an 'Ordinary Joe' manager who has made some very strange calls.

Why doesn't he play Angel Di Maria in his best position when he has paid £60m for him?

Why doesn't he play Wayne Rooney further up the pitch where he can win games for you?

It is bizarre and there just seems to be no plan.

Lawro's prediction: 2-0
