Manchester United misfit Angel di Maria said in an interview last week he is happy at Old Trafford
It sounded more like propaganda to help the club recoup a large slice of the £60million they paid Real Madrid for his services last summer.
The truth is, Di Maria didn’t want to join United in the first place. And Football Grapevine understands that rather than want to ‘prove’ himself under Louis van Gaal the Argentine has told his advisers he wants out.
Last summer he had been lined up to sign for Paris Saint-Germain, but FFP restrictions scuppered that deal.
United dove in as they went on a desperate spending spree to revive their squad.
Football Grapevine understands, however, that Di Maria still wants to play for PSG and that is now on the cards - although his value will have dropped into the £30million bracket.
That said, there could be a complex equation which would see PSG striker Edinson Cavani move to Old Trafford.
Straight-forward exchange-plus-cash deals are now rare because of the myriad of agents involved.
But the movement of Di Maria to PSG and Cavani to United is possible.
What is certain is that United won’t take up the option to buy on-loan Radamal Falcao from Monaco.
And unless Falcao is willing to take a ‘hair cut’ on his wages he could end up back in Monte Carlo.
No Premier League club is currently interested in the Colombian striker.
