Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has praised the contributions of his full-backs recently in the match programme, adding that he thinks Manchester is now Nacho Monreal’s city
In recent weeks Monreal, Kieran Gibbs and young Spaniard Hector Bellerin have all been very impressive as the club moved into third in the Premier League and into the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
Wenger, speaking in his notes in the pre-match programme before the game against West Ham, singled out Monreal in particular for praise.
He said that he believes Monreal can now consider Manchester his city after his goal at Old Trafford in the FA Cup to go with winning a penalty in the 2-0 win over Manchester City at the Etihad a few weeks ago:
“When you look back at the positive results of the team you always realise that you have great full-backs. That is a vital part in any successful team.
“Today they are dangerous going forward, they have crucial, important decisions to make defensively, and they contribute in a reliable way to the defensive efficiency. It’s probably one of the most important positions in the team.
“[Nacho] has done [well in] Manchester. It’s his city because he got us a penalty at City and he got us our first goal at United. We are all pleased for him because we have two fantastic left-backs. They have produced great contributions this season.”
Monreal has proven himself to be more than a rotational option for Arsenal this season, covering at centre-back and competing well with Gibbs at left-back.
In the Premier League this season no Arsenal player can better his 59 interceptions, and he was recently named in Cesar Azpilicueta’s dream five a side team.
Arsenal are just a point ahead of fourth placed Manchester United and they will looking for another win against West Ham with Liverpool, Southampton and rivals Tottenham Hotspur all chasing them in the race for the top four.
