Arsene Wenger will remind Mesut Ozil of his responsibilities to the club next week after he was spotted partying in Germany just hours after a match he missed supposedly due to illness
The £42m midfielder was excused from duty at Newcastle in Saturday’s 2-1 win and allowed to return home early to Germany ahead of this week’s international double-header, which starts with a game against Australia on Wednesday and ends with a trip to Georgia on Sunday.
Ozil will be expected to return to north London within 48 hours of that game and Wenger’s first act is expected to be a face-to-face meeting in which he will express his disappointment that Ozil has tarnished the image of the club.
The 26-year-old was seen out at the Pearl Nightclub in Berlin the same night as the trip to St James’ Park, raising question marks over his inability to travel with the squad.
Although there was no suggestion of any serious wrongdoing on Ozil’s part, the Arsenal manager will feel that Ozil abused his decision to give him a few extra days’ rest after the exertions of the club’s Champions League near-miss in Monaco.
The latest lecture comes on the back of the talking-to Wenger gave to goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny after he was caught smoking in the team dressing room after a defeat against Southampton.
The Poland goalkeeper was fined £20,000 and has struggled to keep his place since, sharing goalkeeping duties with David Ospina.
