Ashley Williams is 'a top six player': Savage

Ashley Williams should be playing for a top six club and the defender will not be at Swansea City next season, says ex-Wales midfielder Robbie Savage

Williams, 30, was linked with Arsenal and Liverpool but signed a three-year extension to his contract in July 2014.

Swansea are eighth in the Premier League after a 1-0 win at Burnley but Savage believes Wales captain Williams should be playing at a bigger club.

"I'm surprised Ashley Williams is not playing for a top six side," he said.

Williams initially joined Swansea on loan from Stockport County in March 2008 before the deal was made permanent in a £400,000 deal the same year.

He has played a crucial role in guiding the Swans out of the Championship and into the Premier League and has established himself as a Wales regular and national team captain.

Sunderland bid £4m for the centre-back last summer, which was turned down by Swansea and Williams ended speculation surrounding his future by extending his contract.

Savage, who won 39 caps for Wales, believes the Swansea captain is one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

"I think Ashley Williams is a leader, he's good on the ball, defends the near post very well and wins headers," Savage said on Radio 5 live's 606 programme.

"I'll be surprised if he's there next year. Do I think he'll be there next season? If I was a top club I would buy him."
