Argentina coach Gerardo Martino has called up Carlos Tevez again but he has told the Juventus forward he will have to fight for a place in the squad for this summer’s Copa América

Martino brought Tevez back into the fold in November for two friendlies in England after the former Manchester City striker had been overlooked since 2011. Tevez missed out on his country’s run to the World Cup final last July, when they lost to Germany.

Tevez is vying with Sergio Agüero and Gonzalo Higuaín for a place in Argentina’s team at the Copa América in Chile this June and July, Martino said.

“We have three players of such quality playing one single position [for their clubs],” Martino told TyC Sports.

Argentina play El Salvador in Washington on 28 March and Ecuador in New Jersey three days later.

Martino dropped Manchester City centre-back Martin Demichelis but he recalled central defender Ezequiel Garay and winger Ezequiel Lavezzi, who both last played for Argentina in the World Cup final.

Real Sociedad goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli was given a first call-up and Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio was recalled for the first time since 2011 to join a 22-man squad of European-based players. Martino may add players from the domestic league next week.
