Celtic manager Ronny Deila has explained in the Glasgow Evening Times why he and his players walked around the pitch applauding fans after the win against Aberdeen
Laps of honour are traditional with the final home game of a season and there is a suggestion the Bhoys feel the title race could be over after the big win against their nearest rivals.
However, the Norwegian has confirmed that not to be the case and that the gesture was just a way to say thank you to supporters for their backing through an important game.
“At the end of the match, we were not celebrating the title race being over. We were saying thank you to the fans,” said Deila.
It’s understandable why Celtic would do a lap of honour after a big game considering the disappointing defeat they suffered in the Europa League against Inter Milan last week.
It’s also understandable why Aberdeen fans at Parkhead could be upset and annoyed by the action, even though they will be nine points behind the Bhoys in the title race if Celtic win their game in hand.
Deila has done well to nip the issue in the bud quickly and Celtic can’t be blamed for wanting to thank a group of loyal supporters who are backing them through a tense stage of the season.
Celtic’s focus now moves to the home game against St Johnstone in the SPL this week.
