Manchester United legend Gary Neville has blasted Manchester City midfielder David Silva in his column for the Telegraph

The Premier League champions were beaten 2-1 on by Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, leaving Chelsea comfortably leading the race for the title and struggling both domestically and in Europe.

The performance against the in-form Reds has came in for criticism from many corners, with Brendan Rodgers’ side dominating the midfield battle and several of City’s stars putting in poor performances.

Now, Neville has blasted one of those men, star midfielder David Silva in particular, for what he describes as a dereliction on duty during the game.

“Silva is a player I admire as much any currently playing in the Premier League,” wrote Neville.

“But there was one incident on Merseyside which summed up City. Silva was tackled and it took him 10 seconds to get back to his feet and another 45 seconds to rejoin the game. In a 4-4-2 system you can’t have such a dereliction of duty by anyone.”

City lined up with Silva alongside midfielders Fernandinho, Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri but a lack of cohesion saw them cut open on several occasions by Liverpool’s attacking trio of Phillipe Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Raheem Sterling as well as elsewhere.

Only Brazilian Fernandinho looked like he was interested in the defensive side of City’s game, and Neville has criticised their approach to the game, especially the more tougher aspects involved with such a high profile fixture.

“It was embarrassing how City’s midfielders approached the tougher aspects of the game,” added Neville.

“Quite frankly, the desire of City’s players in transition from having the ball to being without the ball against Liverpool on Sunday was nothing short of appalling in a game of that magnitude.”
