George Best’s sister said he would feel “betrayed” by his son Calum’s autobiography in which he claims the footballer attacked him in a booze-fuelled rage

Barbara McNarry, 62, slammed the Celebrity Big Brother star’s book Second Best: My Dad and Me.

In it Calum, 34, tells how Manchester United legend George lashed out at him when he was just 14, accusing the teenager of having an affair with his 23-year-old fiancée Alex.

Barbara and husband Norman, 66, responded to the claims reported in the Mirror last week.

Norman, 66, said: “George would feel a great sense of betrayal at all this and at the nastiness of Calum’s words.

“This has been a very painful experience for the entire family. We are not angry or bitter, we are just hurt and simply want to defend his father’s memory.

“We are very disappointed by all of what has been alleged about someone who had his flaws but is still admired and loved by many fans throughout the world.”

Calum tells how George returned from an all-day drinking session after leaving his son at home with Alex.

He writes: “My alcohol-poisoned dad is convinced his 14-year-old son and his beautiful fiancée are getting it on behind his back.

“‘You piece of s***’, he shouts. ‘F*** off. You’re not my f***ing son’.

“And boom! – his right hand whips up to my throat. The back of my head hits the wall, his hand tightens around my neck and my feet lift up off the ground.

“‘You’re not my son. You’re not even meant to be,’ he shouts. ‘I hate you’.”

He said Calum should show more respect for his father’s legacy, however troubled their relationship.

Norman, who lives near Belfast, added: “Calum’s behaviour is causing us a lot of heartache.”

Best died aged 59 in 2005 from multiple organ failure following complications due to a liver transplant and his alcoholism.

Barbara, the sole beneficiary of her brother’s will, helped set up the George Best Foundation to help local football projects and research into liver disease.

The charity gave away £280,000 but was wound up last September due to Barbara’s ill health and wanting to enjoy retirement.
