Gus Poyet: Adam Johnson's arrest was the worst day in my managerial career
Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has spoken of his toughest week in management following the arrest of midfielder Adam Johnson
Poyet was speaking following Sunderland's 1-1 draw at Hull City last night, a match which saw tempers boil over as he was sent to the stands for kicking over a drinks cooler.
The arrest of Johnson on Monday probably did not help Poyet's mood as the Uruguayan alluded to afterwards.
When asked about the draw, Poyet said: "The only thing I can tell you is that it was a very difficult day yesterday. Very difficult day. I've never had one like that, very difficult."
Sections of Sunderland's travelling support chanted loudly in support of suspended winger Johnson in the opening minutes of their side's clash with Hull.
The England international has been released on bail after he was arrested on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16, and has been suspended by the Black Cats pending the outcome of a police investigation.
But some members of away contingent felt the need to stand by their player, with a voluble rendition of "there's only one Adam Johnson" moments after kick-off at the KC Stadium.
Poyet insists he did not hear the chanting: 'I'm not very good at getting the songs. When I was playing I used to ask my kids who speak better English than me about the songs."
Johnson was arrested and questioned by police for several hours on Monday. He has since been released on bail and suspended by Sunderland, pending the outcome of the investigation.
