Harry Kane: Watching Chelsea lift Capital One Cup at Wembley made fire in my belly burn

A disconsolate Kane trudges up the Wembley steps to shake England manager Roy Hodgson's hand

Harry Kane vowed to return to Wembley with Tottenham and England after the misery of defeat in the Capital One Cup final

Chelsea beat Spurs 2-0 to lift the trophy but Mauricio Pochettino's players are determined to take something positive from the sobering experience of a near miss.

'When you see Chelsea lifting that trophy it makes the fire in your belly burn,' said Kane.

'You want to be back and you want to be lifting that trophy and that's what we've got to do with the squad we have.

'It's our first season, we've got a very young team and a new coaching staff and I thought we gave a good account of ourselves. A lot of us were playing in our first final and it's an experience and we've got to learn from it.

England manager Roy Hodgson was at Wembley and is expected to hand the 21-year-old Spurs striker his first call-up into the senior squad, for games against Lithuania at Wembley and Italy in Turin, later this month.

'It would be nice,' said Kane. 'I've always said if I'm picked it will be a very proud moment.

But, again, I've just got to keep focused on the games ahead and trying to do my best for Tottenham Hotspur. If I'm picked then obviously I'll be delighted.

'I'm enjoying the attention. It shows I'm doing well and that's what any footballer wants, to have the backing from your fans and everyone around you.

'We've got to move on as quickly as we can because we've got another game on Wednesday and I'll be looking to get on the score sheet there and get back to scoring ways. It's a disappointing day but we hope to be back in the seasons to come.'

Kane scored twice when Tottenham beat Chelsea 5-3 in the Barclays Premier League on New Year's Day, but was barely given a sniff of goal at Wembley.

'I'm disappointed, I'm always disappointed when I don't score,' he said. 'But it's tough.

Chelsea are a good side and they've got one of the best defences in the league.

'Neither team created real clear-cut chances, and it just went Chelsea's way. I' m gutted for the players, for my team-mates, for the staff, for the club itself. I thought we gave it a go, we gave it our all.

'It just didn't go for us. Both their goals you could say were a bit scrappy, a bit lucky, but that's the difference in the top games on the big stage. That's something we've got to learn from and try to move on from.'

Spurs have not won for five games, their worst run of form under Pochettino. They have crashed out of Europe and lost at Wembley in three days and must bounce back against Swansea in the Premier League on Wednesday.

'We've got a lot of games to go,' said Kane. 'The Premier League is the only competition we're in so we've got to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible and see where it takes us in the league. We've got character in this side and we'll be looking to win at home.'
