Laurent Koscielny: We say the same thing every year
Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny has offered up the most accurate assessment yet of the Gunners’ latest Champions League exit
The Gunners were hotly-tipped to make the Champions League quarter-finals after being drawn against Monaco in the last-16, but were unable to overturn a 3-1 first leg deficit – despite a brave effort in France.
The result means Arsenal have been eliminated from the tournament for the fifth consecutive season in a row, with the scoreline strongly reminiscent of their recent ‘glorious failures’ against Bayern Munich in 2013 and AC Milan in 2012.
And centre-back Laurent Koscielny’s post-match quotes will certainly strike a chord with Arsenal fans, as he offered an extremely honest summation of the night’s events.
‘We say same thing every year,’ he said.
‘Our first game is catastrophic. We have to put it right… play well in two games’.
Koscielny’s defensive partner Per Mertesacker also gave a brutally honest account of the tie, admitting that Arsenal just hadn’t been good enough.
‘They [Monaco] deserved it because they played much better in the first leg,’ he told ITV1.
‘We had to come back from a massive deficit. We played well today but it wasn’t enough.’
While Arsenal fans will be glad to see their players acknowledge this problem, they can certainly be forgiven for wondering if words will ever turn into actions when it comes to the Champions League.
