Louis van Gaal: The secret behind Manchester United's revival

Louis van Gaal says triangles are the reason for Manchester United's revival

Louis van Gaal claims creating triangles on the pitch has been the reason for Manchester United's upturn in fortunes

In news that will delight Match of the Day pundits, the Dutchman says the increased options for his players have made United get back to somewhere near their fluent best.

Upon his arrival at Old Trafford last summer, Van Gaal experimented playing three at the back and a midfield diamond.

But the 63-year-old came in for heavy criticism for his side's style of play with them often grinding out results.

But a switch to 4-3-3 has brought an upturn in performances with impressive wins over Tottenham and Liverpool strengthening their grasp on fourth place.

And Van Gaal claims the creation of triangles in his favoured formation has allowed them to dominate teams."It's always dependent on the players involved, but everybody knows the system I prefer is 1-4-3-3 with a No.10 or No.6," he told Sky Sports.

"A holding midfielder or a No.10 player behind the strikers.

"It's dependable of the quality of the players, but also of the opponent.

"But I prefer it because that's the easiest system to dominate the game because it is over the whole pitch triangles and that gives the players always two options at least.

"But I have played with several other systems because of the quality of the players who were available in that moment."
