Louis van Gaal: Why I dropped Radamel Falcao for Newcastle game

Louis van Gaal left out Radamel Falcao for Manchester United's trip to Newcastle because Marouane Fellaini provided a better pressing option

The 29-year-old Colombian has netted just four Premier League goals since his loan move fom Monaco.

He was subbed during United's 2-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday and didn't feature at all against Newcastle last night.

That's despite United chasing the win for long periods before Ashley Young eventually netted an 89th-minute winner.

When asked why Falcao was left on the bench, Van Gaal said before the game: "We want to beat the pressure with him.

"We expect Newcastle to press us, so maybe with Fellaini we'll beat the pressing of Newcastle much easier."

And former Red Devils midfielder Ray Wilkins reckons this marks the end of Falcao's United career.

He told talkSPORT: "Falcao has been struggling for goals.

"He hasn’t shown any type of form that we expected when he arrived at Manchester United.

“His form has been very poor in fact, we haven’t seen anything like the player who destroyed Chelsea with Atletico Madrid a few years ago.

“They have already paid a huge loan fee and his wages are extremely expensive. To take him on would require a big fee, I would think they will look elsewhere.”
