Man Utd to use David De Gea as bait to lure Gareth Bale to Old Trafford
United boss Louis van Gaal wants to make the Real Madrid superstar his marquee summer signing
Bale cost Real a world record £85m when he joined from Tottenham in 2013 and went on to help them win the Champions League last season.
But large sections of Real fans have turned on him this season and accused him of not working hard enough for the team.
President Florentino Perez has backed Bale, but the winger is known to be unsettled in Madrid and open to a return to the Premier League.
Van Gaal is willing to tempt Real into brokering a deal by offering De Gea as part of the overall package.
The Spanish giants have been tracking the keeper for the last 12 months as a possible long-term replacement for veteran star Iker Casillas.
De Gea has less than 18 months remaining on his contract and has still to agree a new deal.
The 24-year-old insists he is happy in Manchester, but would find a move to the Bernabeu almost impossible to resist.
Van Gaal, along with his United bosses, is now deciding if he can be used as a makeweight in a possible £60m deal that would see Bale travel in the opposite direction.
United would be willing to meet the Wales star’s wage demands of around £300,000 a week that would put him on a par with skipper Wayne Rooney.
Bale’s arrival would see United look to offload record signing Angel Di Maria to the highest bidder after just one season.
