Mendes to Man United: De Gea will renew but only for six months

Spain's La Razon newspaper have thrown something of a curveball at the David De Gea and Manchester United situation. The Spanish goalkeeper has a contract with Manchester United until June 2016 and can start negotiations with other clubs and sign a pre-contract agreement from next January - leaving when his current deal ends for absolutely nothing

It's a terrible situation for Manchester United and there have been claims of so many things from so many people that it's almost impossible to know what is accurate. What is abundantly clear is that Manchester United will want De Gea to stay and will have made efforts to get him to sign a new contract with the club. It certainly won't be Manchester United stalling and therefore the other side - De Gea and his representatives - must be the ones holding things back.

Whatever blame may be thrown at Jorge Mendes for De Gea not renewing, the goalkeeper is a fully grown man and if he'd have wanted to renew with Manchester United by now then he would have done - Mendes represents many of the world's best players and this situation doesn't happen with all of them, or even a decent percentage.

La Razon say that De Gea is hesitant to sign a long term Manchester United contract because Real Madrid is his dream. Therefore it's claimed Mendes has come up with a proposal, De Gea can renew for six months and then six months again - so he doesn't get to the point where he can decide to leave for free and sign a pre-contract agreement, but he also doesn't lose the leverage he has right now over Manchester United regarding a transfer.

If the claims are true, and it has to be a big if, then Manchester United perhaps need to point De Gea to where the door is.
