Napoli Defender To Sit Out Rest Of Season Over Contract Dispute

Napoli right back Christian Maggio looks set to be benched for the foreseeable future after refusing to sign a new deal with the club, throwing the long term future of the player in doubt

The Italy international remained an unused substitute during the weekend loss away to Verona and is now expected to have his first team opportunities severely limited as contractual wrangles continue with Partenopei officials.

According to Cronache di Napoli, the new extension offered to the ex-Sampdoria defender is linked to match appearances and this is the clause that Maggio is reportedly unhappy with.

The 33-year-old has suffered with injuries throughout his career and only last year needed an emergency operation to relieve complications associated to a severe lung condition.

This season, the player has featured 21 times under Rafa Benitez, but has yet to score.
