No-nonsense Dick Advocaat is perfect for Sunderland

Jermain Defoe of Sunderland

Experienced Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has been impressed with Dick Advocaat's straight-forward approach and tough work ethic

Dick Advocaat is the sort of straight-forward character Sunderland need in their fight against relegation, according to Jermain Defoe.

Whereas his predecessor, Gustavo Poyet, was a great talker, Advocaat is sparing in his words; but Defoe says his simple message has got through.

Advocaat’s first game, a 1-0 defeat at West Ham United, suggested as much.

“His experience speaks for itself,” said the much-travelled striker. “All the lads know what he’s about and he’s made it very clear since he came in what he expects from us.

“He’s straight-forward and to the point. He has made it clear that if we are not willing to work for the team and get the fans back on our side, then we won’t play.

“It’s important we have a manager like that. If you look at the top managers in the world, Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho, they are no-nonsense and they’re winners.

“He is the kind of character we need.

“We’ve got to concentrate on ourselves and not look at what anyone else is doing.

“He will have the boys in over the (international) break training hard. He’s got time to work with us and we’re looking forward to that. New managers have different ideas.”

The most pleasing aspect of Sunderland’s performance was they looked threatening on the counter-attack. The most disappointing was that when the best chance of the game fell to Defoe, he missed it.

“The manager wanted us to be compact and in transition when we get the ball,” he said. “He told me to keep making runs and we got into some good positions.

“He told me to do what I’ve been doing for years and it could have been a different game if I put that chance away.

“I’m disappointed I didn’t score because I expect myself to score those chances.”
