Ross Barkley: I want Lukaku's position

Ross Barkley

Everton's Ross Barkley says he is best played as a striker, despite most of his career so far being spent as an attacking midfielder

Barkley, 21, has scored twice in 28 games in all competitions for Everton this season, with Roberto Martinez's side 13th in the Premier League table.

The England international told Premier League World:  "I'm a striker.

"I can have my greatest impact there. I'm free to roam around, take players on, have shots and create chances."

England captain Wayne Rooney spoke to Barkley after Friday's 4-0 over Lithuania, with the Evertonian winning his 10th cap as a 70th-minute substitute.

"The only advice I gave him was to watch the game from the bench with England," said Rooney.

"He will know how to get into the opposition, where the spaces are. That's what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said to me when I was young, so you know where to be when you come on. If it helps, then great."

Former Cardiff City manager Solskjaer was a striker at Manchester United with Rooney before retiring in 2007.
