The rumours linking Cristiano Ronaldo with a return to Manchester United just will not go away and they have re-emerged in Madrid-based newspaper AS again on Sunday

AS columnist Javier Matallanas has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson was at the Bernabeu last Tuesday for Real Madrid’s Champions League match with Schalke.

Ferguson sat next to Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes, and after the match the legendary Manchester United manager had dinner with the Portuguese superstar.

Manchester United are still keen to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo and they sent Ferguson to try and persuade the Real Madrid forward.

Ronaldo has often talked of his admiration and respect for Ferguson, so it seems natural that the Premier League side would send the Scot to make Manchester United’s case in Madrid.

The fact Schalke nearly squeaked through against Real Madrid, despite Los Blancos winning the first leg 2-0 in January, could not have helped Ronaldo’s mood.

Javier Matallanas claims that United had a 200 million euro offer for the Portuguese superstar prepared last summer but this was scuppered when Ronaldo signed a new deal with Real Madrid.

Yet, Ronaldo’s relationship with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez remains poor, according to Matallanas, and the Spanish giants have not ruled out selling him if an attractive offer arrives.

Manchester United have a key game against Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid will be hoping to cut the gap on Barcelona ahead of next week’s El Clasico, when they host Levante at the Bernabeu this evening.
