Speaking ahead of Italy’s trip to face Bulgaria on Saturday, Marco Verratti has admitted that he doesn’t consider himself one of best players in the squad yet and he would love to lead the next generation of Italian internationals
The talented Paris Saint-Germain midfielder already has ten international appearances to his name and will stake his claim for a regular starting berth as Antonio Conte will be without both Andrea Pirlo and Daniele De Rossi.
“It would be great to be the symbol in a change of a generation [of players],” the 22-year-old told reporters at a press confrence at Coverciano.
“I think that a young player has needs to show a coach that he can trust him.
“Many times, they [youngsters] are not afforded the opportunities, maybe that is the difference from other countries.
“When I am with the Azzurri, I know I am not the best player.
“We have great champions who have won everything ahead of me. It is normal to play Pirlo and De Rossi when they are around.
“I will always make myself available, but I have to earn my place.”
