Why Carver's Everton comments send Newcastle players completely the wrong message

John Carver doesn't really 'get' that Newcastle United are a big club, does he?

For, according to his logic, winning just twice in 10 matches doesn't add any pressure whatsoever for the St James' Park outfit.

That form - according to him - is good enough for a club like Newcastle. And their current position should create no worries whatsoever on Tyneside, judging by his tone.

Indeed, speaking at a pre-match conference ahead of Sunday afternoon's visit to Everton, Carver happily stated that there is absolutely no pressure on Newcastle and that they must merrily turn up at Goodison Park and simply 'express' themselves.

He's joking, right?

Everton may be under pressure but, should they beat the Magpies, they will be just four points behind them and, judging by Carver's record, catching them from there wouldn't be all that hard.

By alleviating the pressure on his Newcastle players, the 50-year-old may be using the beginner's guide to mind games - thinking he'll help them perform to their best - but what he's actually doing is giving them a free pass to reproduce the very abject performances they have been producing time and again this season.

He has sent his players completely the wrong message against Everton and his lack of ambition has once again shone through.

Surely there can be no future for a man with such blatantly low expectations at St James' Park.

A smart move - one argued for on HITC Sport earlier today - would be to reward Carver's loyalty to Newcastle but only in the capacity of a smaller staff role.

Appointing him manager on a full-time basis, as the comments on that article and so many more show, would lead to legions of Newcastle fans simply not caring anymore - as the club's hierarchy would be showing a clear disregard for anything football related.

The obvious problem, however, is that football isn't really the priority for the Newcastle owners.
