Chelsea secure Premier League title

Eden Hazard celebrates scoring the first goal for Chelsea.

Chelsea are officially the new Premier League champions after the Blues registered a 1-0 victory over London rivals Crystal Palace on Sunday

By winning the league with three games to spare, the Blues equal Jose Mourinho’s achievement in his first spell in charge at the club where he managed the same feat in the 2004/05 season.

The Stamford Bridge outfit have also broken the record for the amount of time spent at the top, and have lost just three matches in all competitions this season.

As for the deciding match itself, it was somewhat apt that Eden Hazard – recently named the PFA Player of the Year after a stellar season – grabbed the decisive goal.

The Belgian was tripped in the box at the end of the first half, and despite uncharacteristically scuffing his penalty and seeing it saved by Palace shotstopper Julian Speroni, he was quick enough to pounce on the rebound and slot the ball home, sending the Stamford Bridge faithful into raptures.

The remainder of the match resembled something of an exhibition match despite a battling display from Crystal Palace, and the party amongst the Chelsea supporters was already in full force well before the final whistle was blown which finally confirmed what most football fans had known for a long time.

The title triumph – Chelsea’s first since 2010 and Jose Mourinho’s first league championship since his time at Real Madrid – sees the Blues complete a league and cup double, having also won the Capital One Cup against Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the season.
