Schalke have released the midfielders Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sidney Sam with immediate effect. The midfielder Marco Höger has been suspended from training and first team action until the end of next week
The move comes less than 24 hours after Schalke’s 2-0 loss in Cologne that threatens the club’s hopes of gaining a place in next season’s Europa League.
“Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt announced there would be consequences after Sunday’s defeat away to Cologne and the first action has been taken: Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sidney Sam have been released with immediate effect,” read a club statement. “Marco Höger is suspended from training and first-team action up to and including Saturday, 16th May.”
Boateng was sent home from Ghana’s team at last year’s World Cup in Brazil. With two matches remaining in the season, Schalke are two points ahead of seventh-placed Borussia Dortmund.
Schalke began the season with hopes of qualifying for the Champions League but have struggled under their new coach Roberto di Matteo.
