Reports in France last night suggested United have beaten off Arsenal to complete a £25m deal
And the France star, 25, has helped set the wheels in motion to make an Old Trafford move happen.
He recently admitted he was keen to leave Saints to play Champions League football.
Schneiderlin, who has two years left on his contract, said: “I think my decision is made.
“The Champions League is my goal and if I leave Southampton it will be for a club in the Champions League.”
Boss Louis van Gaal is a big Schneiderlin fan.
United struggled this season when Michael Carrick was injured and the Red Devils boss believes Schneiderlin is the answer to his problems.
The Gunners were thought to be favourites but United are now at the front of the queue.
Former Old Trafford star Gary Neville hailed the midfielder earlier this season and said he had the quality to play for any of the top four clubs.
