Chelsea's Nemanja Matic suffered injury in League Cup Final celebrations
Jose Mourinho has revealed Nemanja Matic suffered an ankle injury - celebrating Chelsea’s Capital One Cup Final victory
Midfield enforcer Matic was suspended for Sunday's Wembley win over Tottenham but played his part in the trophy lift and celebrations, fully kitted up.
The Serbian star was also banned for Wednesday's 1-0 win at West Ham after his recent red card against Burnley.
Chelsea appealed Matic's dismissal to get his ban cut to two games.
And Mourinho said the 26-year-old wouldn’t have been able to play against the Hammers, even they had it slashed to one, after a freak incident at Wembley.
Mourinho said: “Matic is injured and he got an injury celebrating the Cup. I'm not kidding.
“It's not a big injury, but today he couldn't have played. He twisted his ankle.
“If he had not been suspended, he could not have played today. [It happened] On the pitch. He had shinpads on, but he didn't have tape on.”
Mourinho insists Matic will recover for the second leg of Chelsea’s Champions League last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain at Stamford Bridge next Wednesday.
Mourinho said: “He will play against Paris. He will be in training on Saturday or Sunday.”
