Jamie Carragher blames Steven Gerrard's emotional side for 'moment of madness'

Jamie Carragher put the blame for Steven Gerrard's reckless red card on the fact that he is an 'emotional player'

The Sky pundit said that the frustration of being benched would have been building inside the club captain, and he played with his heart not his head.

He said: "Steven Gerrard is an emotional player, you see that in his career and it's taken teams I've played in into some unbelievable moments.

"You think of the cup final against West Ham, Istanbul. That wasn't Steven Gerrard playing with a cold, calculated head.

"That was just playing from the heart, he can do special things like that, but on the flip side, when he plays in games like these [Liverpool] he can come on frustrated."

And Carragher believes the reality of slipping down the pecking order at Liverpool is something Gerrard may be struggling to come to terms with.

He added: "It was a moment of madness. There's no doubt him not playing at Swansea and then not playing this game, there was a bit of frustration.

"He's been at Liverpool 17 or 18 years, he's always been the man, the captain, there's never been a case when he's been out of the team.

"Watching the first half from the bench he'd have been disappointed, Liverpool weren't playing well, they were losing 1-0.

"He'd have been watching players in his position performing not great and thinking 'why am I not playing? Why am I not on that pitch?'"

The red card is Steven Gerrard's seventh red card of his career.
