Manchester United overcame Liverpool in today’s early Premier League kick-off thanks to a well taken brace from former Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata
The clash at Anfield will, however, be remembered for a Steven Gerrard moment of madness, that saw the Liverpool captain coming on at half-time to replace the ineffective Adam Lallana only to be sent off less than a minute later following a stamp on United’s summer signing Ander Herrera.
The former England international will now miss games against Arsenal, Newcastle United and Brendan Rodgers’ side’s FA Cup quarter-final replay against Blackburn Rovers
Following the game, the midfielder spoke about his sending off, speaking to Sky Sports, Gerrard said:
“I’ve come out here to apologise to everyone in our dressing room and to all the supporters.
“I take full responsibility for my actions. I’ve let my teammates down. More importantly I’ve let the fans down.”
Liverpool are now five points behind today’s opponents who occupy the all important last Champions League qualification place.
Gerrard is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, after 17 of years service, to join Major League Soccer outfit Los Angeles Galaxy.
