Jamie Carragher reckons Liverpool win finish Manchester United's season if they beat the Red Devils at Anfield today
The Kop legend is tipping Brendan Rodgers to outwit LVG in the race to finish in the top four - and firmly believes Liverpool have form and momentum on their side.
Victory for the Merseysiders would push them a point above United and into a Champions League spot.
And Carragher, who played 737 games in his 17 years with The Reds, believes a home win would leave deep wounds in United's psyche.
Carra said: "I fancy Liverpool for this one although I have to say, United really impressed me with the performance they put in against Spurs.
"Until then, United were getting results without delivering the performances whereas Liverpool have been doing both lately.
"The bottom line is this is a bigger game for Liverpool - because if United were to win then that would open up a five-point gap which may be too much to claw back.
"But if it's a draw, Liverpool won't panic. They won't be worried by a two-point gap. If Liverpool won, however, that would land a psychological blow on United's players."
Yet while Carragher has not been overly impressed by the work LVG has done so far at Old Trafford, he believes there are signs that the Dutchman is beginning to find his feet at the home of the 20-time champions.
Carra said: "Van Gaal has consistently said that his formation has been determined by the number of injuries he has had - and it is only recently that the injuries have started to clear. Against Spurs, we saw him use the type of formation he traditionally preferred throughout his coaching career.
"So whereas previously he had to change the formation around to fit the personnel, now he has what he wants.
"His goal was to get United back into the Champions League and if he manages to do that then he deserves enormous credit."
