Liverpool centre-back Martin Skrtel has been charged by the FA over his challenge on Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea in the closing stages of yesterday’s Premier League clash between the two sides
The Slovakian defender appeared to stand on the Spanish keeper’s leg as he closed him down while deployed as an emergency striker in the 95th minute at Anfield.
An FA statement confirmed that the incident was not seen by match officials during the game but was caught on video. In order for the charge to be brought, a three-man panel of former elite match officials has already unanimously agreed that Skrtel should have been sent-off.
He has now been charged with violent conduct, which will carry an automatic three-match ban if the charge is upheld.
In that case, Skrtel would miss the Premier League games away at Arsenal and at home to Newcastle, either side of the FA Cup replay against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. Those are the same matches for which captain Steven Gerrard is suspended.
Skrtel has until 6pm tomorrow to respond to the charge.
