Real Madrid sold Di Maria because he was ugly
Barcelona’s assistant director of football Carles Rexach has risked provoking a Spanish affaire d’État with his take on Real Madrid’s sale of Angel Di Maria
Di Maria left the Bernabeu in pretty acrimonious circumstances last summer, the fallout from which can still be felt from time to time, with Carlo Ancelotti recently slamming the Argentine for leaving purely for the money.
It was reported that Di Maria felt undervalued by the club; having won the Man of the Match award in the victorious Champions League final, he and his agent felt that he deserved a new and improved contract, on a par with those of the club’s biggest stars.
But when that proposal was rebuked, Di Maria left for Manchester.
That was the official and in all likelihood the accurate version, but Barcelona director Rexach has now suggested an alternative version.
Speaking to Catalan media Regio7, Rexach made the suggestion that Madrid sold Di Maria last summer because he was ‘too ugly’, , saying that the Argentine’s looks didn’t correspond with the club’s image.
Florentino Perez [Madrid's president] looks at the world market and wants a team of Galacticos for everyone to admire. Do you understand what I mean?”
“[Cristiano] Ronaldo is the flagship of the club. Perez is selling an international brand.
“Vicente del Bosque and Di Maria are too ugly for Real Madrid. They are different from Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez.”
