Southampton allowed Lloyd Isgrove to leave to join Sheffield Wednesday last week
Southampton have made a clever move by loaning out Lloyd Isgrove to Sheffield Wednesday, only days after he signed a new contract at St. Mary's.
Wednesday took Isgrove on loan last week and it looks to be a transfer that will benefit both clubs, as the youngster can now receive regular first-team football.
Isgrove has not had too many chances at St. Mary's, but there is a belief that he can make an impact after gaining some experience at Championship level.
Les Reed told the club's official site soon after the move that Isgrove was likely to be involved in Ronald Koeman's first-team squad next season, but the deal showed Southampton's tactical acumen in more ways than one.
If Southampton had allowed Isgrove to leave on loan any earlier in the season, they may have been putting his future at St. Mary's in jeopardy.
Isgrove's contract was previously expiring in the summer and by allowing him to leave without securing his future would have been a risk.
The 22-year-old may have been convinced to leave Southampton had his loan spell gone well, prior to this contract signing, but by making him commit to the club before allowing him to make a temporary move, Southampton took any risk out of the transfer.
They can now only benefit from the move and it is another dealing which shows the kind of foresight which has made the Saints a real force in English football when it comes to the production of top home-grown talent.
