A leading French politician has called on Zlatan Ibrahimovic to leave France following his foul-mouthed rant after Paris Saint-Germain’s defeat at Bordeaux
Marine le Pen, the leader of France's far-right Front National, reacted angrily in a radio interview following the incident at the Stade Chaban Delmas and has called on the Swede to leave the country if he hates it so much.
Ibrahimovic was quoted saying he had never experienced a good refereeing performance in France and that the country did not deserve PSG.
His comments, which are being investigated by the French Football League, have also drawn criticism from across the French political spectrum.
Jerome Guedj, a leading Socialist party politician has labelled his comments as unacceptable, adding: "Let him play football and shut up, or at least be respectful of this country, and the football supporters who were also insulted."
he French sports minister, Patrick Kanner called on Ibrahimovic to apologise - saying that his disappointment at the result did not justify offensive comments about the referee and the country hosting him.
Ibrahimovic has since issued an apology in which he insists his comment were not directed to France or the French population.
"I would like to apologise if anyone felt offended,” the statement read. “I want to make it clear that my remarks were not directed at France or the French.
“I was talking about football, I lost the match and I accept that but I don't accept when the referee does not follow the rules.
"I expressed myself when I was upset and everyone knows that in these moments, the words surpass the meaning."
This controversy comes less than a week after Ibrahimovic was sent off against Chelsea in the Champions League and accused Jose Mourinho’s players of acting like babies.
