Ronald Koeman: Depay must toughen up to succeed at United

Manchester United’s young new £25 million winger Memphis Depay will have to toughen up as he faces a momentous challenge to step up to the Premier League, warns Dutch coach Ronald Koeman

The Saints manager believes Depay may struggle to adapt to the “tough” Premier League.

PSV Eindhoven and Manchester United announced the transfer yesterday after Zapsportz.com predicted the deal in the morning.

The 21-year-old Depay is one of the brightest young talents in Europe and while the signing has received widespread praise from United fans, Koeman warned the player must be prepared to adapt physically and mentally to life in England.

Speaking about the transfer, Koeman said: ”For him it’s a fantastic move. He has had a great season and last season made the step up to be a senior player, not a junior player.

“He still has to develop himself. It will be tough for him because the Premier League is tough in a physical and mental way.

“It’s a big step for him. But he’s a great talent, a fast player and a very good signing for Manchester United.”
