Arsenal have missed out on a £2.9 million payment from Barcelona after a clause in the deal that took Thomas Vermaelen to the Nou Camp was voided, reports The Evening Standard
It has previously been reported that Barcelona would have to pay the fee to Arsenal if and when they won this season's Champions League.
Having seen off Juventus in Berlin on Saturday night to claim their fourth European title in nine years, Arsene Wenger was surely looking forward to getting a little extra added to his summer transfer budget.
However, Barcelona owe nothing on the £15m deal because Vermaelen failed to play a single minute of this season's Champions League.
Nou Camp officials entered into the contract that should Vermaelen fail to make an appearance in the competition then the £2.9m clause would be void whether Barcelona win it or not.
