Arsenal legend Ian Wright has questioned Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers' coaching ability, wondering aloud why he could not fix the defensive issues which cost the Reds their first league title since 1990 last season
Liverpool came within a whisker of winning the title in the 2013/14 season, but saw Manchester City pip them to the crown by two points, with a goals conceded total of 50 holing their efforts beneath the waterline.
This season Liverpool finished sixth in the Premier League, slipping well adrift of the top four, conceding just two fewer goals than the previous campaign.
And with Rodgers under fire, Wright has questioned the Northern Irishman's coaching ability.
"I think he is under pressure", Wright told BreatheSport's Football Season Review show.
"I think that with [Luis] Suarez and the way it went, I couldn't believe that with the great coach that he is supposed to be that they didn't work on defence.
"At Arsenal we worked on defence all the time to the point where I hated going to training because all we'd do was work on defending as a team all the time.
"Liverpool would have won the Premier League by a margin if they'd defended as a team better.
"I couldn't believe it. So for someone who is supposed to be as good as Brendan Rodgers is….why didn't he recognise that or do something about it?"
Rodgers faces a crucial meeting with Liverpool's American owners this week where he will be expected to explain why his side finished sixth despite him spending over £100m on new signings last summer.
