Incoming Real Madrid boss Rafa Benitez plans to break up the ‘BBC’, according to this article from SPORT
The tactically obsessed Spaniard is not a fan of the 4-3-3 formation which Carlo Ancelotti put in place, with Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema operating as the three forwards.
Benitez, Sport claim, won’t accept the liberties the front three were afforded under Ancelotti, which meant they were essentially free from defending duties, and needed only to concentrate on creating goals and scoring.
This often led to the ‘broken team’ effect, with Madrid breaking into two lines: the front three too far apart from the other seven, who consequently had to defend too deep, and were often outnumbered.
In any case, the BBC were much less effective in this latest campaign than in the previous one, which saw them blitz defences with their quick-fire counter-attacks, and which helped them win both the Copa del Rey and Champions League in 2014/15.
The system showed signs of decay in this campaign, which gives Benitez all the more reason to break up the BBC, Sport conclude.
He may use the front three when the situation calls for it, but generally he’ll use a system with two forwards.
