Grays Athletic manager subs himself on, scores an equaliser and saves a penalty
Grays Athletic came from 2-0 down at half-time to beat Hampton and Richmond Borough 3-2 last week. A story in itself? You haven't heard the half of it
After watching his side deliver a sub-par first half performance, Grays player-manager Mark Bentley brought himself on shortly after the break, with his team 2-1 down.
First, Bentley glanced a header past the Borough keeper to bring his side level. Then, 13 minutes from time, his goalkeeper was sent off for squaring up to the opposing striker.
With no substitute keeper on the bench, the boss took the jersey to try and see out the remaining minutes without his goal being breached. Four minutes later, that looked highly unlikely, when the visitors were awarded a penalty.
However, man of the moment Bentley kept out the spot kick, and gave his side the impetus to go up the other end and snatch a dramatic, last-gasp stoppage time winner.
Jose Mourinho might the best boss in the business, but we're pretty sure he's never single-handedly turned into Superman to win his team a game.
