President Obama invites Puskas award nominee to White House

Stephanie Roche, who made international headlines when her “wonder goal” made the final three in the Fifa Puskas award for goal of the year, has been invited by President Obama to spend St Patrick’s Day at the White House this year, the Irish Times reports

The annual White House bash on St. Patrick’s Day is one of the most sought after invites on the social calendar and the Dublin girl will be there in person. She recently signed with the Houston Dash team.

She said she was delighted. "What an honor it is to be going to the White House to meet Barack Obama. It is something I knew about a couple of weeks ago and it has just been confirmed so I am thrilled. It is a busy time for me and I am really looking to getting settled in Houston with the new club."

She finished second in the FIFA Goal of the year contest, ahead of Lionel Messi but behind Colombian superstar James Rodriguez.

Unlike the mega-arenas where each of those two men score their goals, Roche scored her goal in modest surroundings for Peamount United against Wexford Youths. Yet, such was the quality of her move, which involved three separate touches, that it made it to the final two.

On Saturday, the 28-year-old tweeted that the announcement had been made saying she was “absolutely delighted” to be invited to the White House.

Roche recently signed a two-year contract to play for the the Houston Dash in the US National Women Soccer League.
