Will Diego Simeone break his promise?

Diego Simeone will have to break promises made to his Atletico Madrid players if he is to succeed Manuel Pellegrini as Manchester City chief this summer

The Argentine is being touted as City’s next boss as the pressure builds on Pellegrini at the Etihad.

But Sunday Mirror Sport understands that Simeone gave assurances to several Atletico players last year that he will remain at the Vicente Calderon Stadium until at least the summer of 2016.

Fernando Torres was one of a number of Atletico stars that Simeone made the vow to when the striker returned in January.

Simeone, 44, prides himself on being a man of his word and a coach that his players can trust.

And Atletico have offered him a seven-year contract that will also give him control over transfers.

As we revealed as far back as November, City will review Pellegrini’s position at the end of the season.

The 61-year-old has been criticised for his reluctance to adapt a 4-4-2 formation that has been exposed this season. However, he insisted: “I have worked in Europe for 10 years, but England is different.”
