Matt Le Tissier: Theo Walcott should leave Arsenal

Theo Walcott should leave Arsenal to fulfill his potential as an attacking threat, according to Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier

The England man does get to show what he is capable of with the Gunners, who often play against sides who sit deep.

His performance last night backed up Le Tissier’s claim, while doubts still persist over his ability to play as a centre-forward.

“He could be a very useful centre-forward in a team that plays on the counter-attack,” Le Tissier told Talksport.

“Arsenal tend to dominate football matches, especially at home, and there isn’t always a lot of space in behind the back four.

“You saw last night, Italy didn’t allow too much space in behind and dropped fairly deep, and there was no room for Theo to manoeuvre.

“I do think he could be a centre-forward if he was in a different team. I don’t think Roy [Hodgson] did him too many favours last night by throwing him against the Italians as a centre-forward, especially when he has spent nearly a year out injured.”

Walcott, 25, is set to enter the final year of his contract in the summer and after talks over his last deal dragged on for months – and was only agreed six months before he became a free agent – there has been speculation he could leave the club with Manchester United and Liverpool heading the queue.

The Gunners brought in Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck in the summer, while the squad is full of attacking players, all of which has limited Walcott’s opportunities since his return from a long term knee injury.
